Nearly 30,000 playground safety reports made across Australia in a year

Swings, slides and seesaws have been a rite of passage for Aussie kids for generations. But lately, a lot of that playground magic has come with a side of "mind the broken bit." Our data, reported by news.com.au, shows parents and carers submitted 29,892 reports about community play spaces in the past 12 months, up 14% on the year before.

A national snapshot:

  • Broken or unsafe equipment topped the list, making up 45% of all playground reports.
  • Dumped rubbish and litter accounted for 8% of reports, graffiti and vandalism for 7%, and general upkeep for 3%.
  • Victoria led the nation with 11,573 reports, up 11% on last year.
  • Queensland came in second with 6,702 reports, up 18%, followed by New South Wales with 5,855, up 10%.
  • The Northern Territory recorded the biggest jump of any state or territory, up 66%, though from a smaller starting point of 213 reports.

Within Victoria, Melbourne's eastern suburbs racked up the most reports at 1,790, while the western suburbs saw the steepest climb, up 21% to 1,667.

So what's actually going wrong out there? Think wobbly swing frames, worn-out ropes, and the odd slide that's seen better days, the kind of everyday wear and tear that adds up across thousands of playgrounds nationwide.

The good news is that every one of those reports helps. A quick Snap helps give local Solvers a clear photo and location of exactly what needs attention, so the next generation of playground daredevils can get back to the fun bits sooner.
