It’s a big number, and it’s made up of a lot of Snaps. News.com.au took a look at our latest data on dumped rubbish, and the picture is clear: Snappers sent in more than 256,000 reports across Australia in the past 12 months, which works out to around 700 a day.
Our CEO, Danny Gorog, summed it up for the story:
“This is clearly an issue that’s growing around the country.”
The Northern Territory recorded the biggest jump, with dumped rubbish reports up 117% on the year before.
In Victoria, Melbourne’s inner suburbs sent in the most, with more than 32,000 reports. The inner east had a smaller total but the biggest rise, up 27%. St Albans, Richmond, Sunshine West, Heidelberg West and Croydon were the top five suburbs by volume, and Geelong, Ballarat and Bendigo led the regional centres.
So what are Snappers finding? It’s not just bags of rubbish. Danny shared that household items are growing faster than dumped rubbish overall:
“Mattresses, renovation waste, couches, TVs, fridges, washing machines, car parts, gas bottles.”
Boats and even Christmas trees have made the list too. Snappers have also flagged nearly 2,000 reports of items such as chemicals, paint and oils, more than 1,200 mentions of needles and syringes, and around 1,000 mentions of suspected asbestos.
And for the calendar fans: January was the busiest month for dumped rubbish reports, and Monday is the busiest day of the week.
