ABC Melbourne: Pothole reports jump 50% as winter rain impacts Victorian roads

Winter in Victoria usually means pulling out the heavy coats, but this year, it also means keeping a sharp eye on the bitumen. Our General Manager, Jordan Gesundheit, recently joined Justin Smith on ABC Melbourne to break down a massive winter surge in road safety hazards across the state.

The discussion highlighted how a blast of seasonal rain can quickly change the driving conditions in our local communities:

  • Snap Send Solve facilitated a massive 1.7 million reports between community members and various authorities across Australia and New Zealand last year.
  • In Victoria alone, public pothole reports for the month of June jumped by almost 50% compared to the exact same period last year.
  • The sharp rise in road issues directly matches a historical seasonal trend, where reporting volumes steadily climb during the wetter winter months.

When Justin asked whether the spike was simply due to more people talking about road maintenance lately, Jordan clarified that community reporting is all about shining a light on preexisting local needs.

"People aren't creating potholes... what they're doing is just raising awareness of issues that are already out there."

The segment also touched on how diverse our community's care for their shared spaces really is. From household waste dumped in lanes to shopping trolleys left in suburban parks, getting accurate location data to the right place is the first step toward a cleaner neighbourhood.
