Snapping Solutions for Winter Woes

A cold-weather guide for keen-eyed Snappers

When the chill sets in, it’s tempting to stay wrapped up indoors. But winter is actually the perfect time to get your Snap on.

Across Australia and New Zealand, winter looks a little different depending on where you are, from snowy peaks to soggy footpaths, and everything in between.

And that means there’s plenty to keep an eye out for (and your community will thank you for it).

Here’s what to watch for in your neck of the woods this winter:

Slippery paths, icy steps and mossy walkways

In the wetter, cooler parts of the country, winter brings puddles, moss and debris onto footpaths. These sneaky slip hazards can turn a quick walk into a not-so-graceful tumble. If you see paths or steps starting to look more like skating rinks, it’s a good time to Snap.

Blocked drains and flooded hazards

Rains are great for the garden but not so much for streets and parks when drains get blocked. If you spot a stormwater drain doing a poor job (or no job at all), it’s worth a Snap before the puddles turn into paddling pools.

Broken streetlights in the dark

With the sun clocking off earlier, streetlights are doing overtime. A light that’s out can turn a familiar route into a safety concern; especially for walkers, cyclists and anyone out after dark. If it’s gone dark where it shouldn’t, Snap it.

Fallen branches and tree hazards

Wind and wet weather can loosen branches or even bring entire trees down. Whether they’re blocking a footpath or looking a bit too close to powerlines for comfort, these timber troubles are definitely Snap-worthy.

Dust-covered signs and street markings

In drier areas, winter winds can kick up plenty of dust. Street signs and road markings can become hard to see, not ideal when you’re trying to find your turnoff or check a speed limit. If it’s covered in dust and hard to read, it’s worth a Snap.

Cracked footpaths and uneven surfaces

Dry weather and shifting soils can leave footpaths looking like a patchwork quilt of cracks and trip hazards. If you see any dodgy-looking slabs or surprise steps where the ground’s lifted, Snap away.

No matter what winter throws your way your Snaps help keep our shared spaces safe, clean, and great to be in all year long. So whether you're braving the chill or enjoying the dry, there's always something worth Snapping.
