Victoria has officially earned a title no driver wants: the Pothole Capital of Australia. A recent investigation by Nine News has used Snap Send Solve data to highlight the crumbling state of Victoria’s road network, revealing that the problem is growing at a rate that is catching both motorists and the budget off guard.
As the state government pledges $1 billion to patch up the mess, our data shows that the community is already miles ahead in identifying the worst-affected areas.
While the Nine News report made it clear that while potholes are a national issue, Victoria is in a league of its own. Our data compared reporting rates across the country, showing that Victoria is comfortably leading the pack when it comes to road damage:
With 32,000 reports logged in Victoria over the last year alone, that represents a massive 28% increase in just 12 months.
While the government points to heavy weather and flooding as the primary cause, the surge in Snaps suggests a deeper need for preventative maintenance. As CEO Danny Gorog noted in the segment, Victorians are acutely aware that the roads are getting worse every year, and they are using their phones to prove it.
