The rapid rise of shared e-bikes has completely transformed how we move around our cities, but as anyone navigating Sydney’s inner suburbs knows, it has also introduced a brand-new urban headache.
Our General Manager, Jordan Gesundheit, appeared on air on 2GB Sydney to chat about the massive influx of community reports tracking abandoned and poorly parked e-bikes. The data shows that while micro-mobility keeps growing, our footpaths are feeling the squeeze.
Our latest data shared during the broadcast highlights how actively New South Wales residents are logging these issues to help keep their streets walkable:
- Snap Send Solve has recorded more than 8,000 reports across Australia regarding shared e-bikes.
- Nationally, e-bike reporting has surged by an extraordinary 155% year-on-year, showing no signs of slowing down.
- New South Wales and Sydney have emerged as the largest growth areas for e-bike complaints in the country.
- While inner-city hubs like Zetland remain reporting hotspots after years of e-bike operations, complaints are spreading fast to surrounding suburbs like Marrickville and Newtown.
When e-bikes are left haphazardly across walkways, the impact goes far beyond visual clutter. As Jordan explained, the nature of these complaints focuses heavily on accessibility and public safety:
"The most common complaint that we get are dumped or badly parked bikes that are blocking footpaths or driveways... when you're blocking a footpath, if there's someone who's in a wheelchair or pushing a pram, you know, that can cause a bit of an issue for sure."
